On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and in honour of Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Salt Satyagraha’ as a part of the civil disobedience movement against the British rulers, hundreds from local communities in Raigarh (Chhattisgarh) marched to mine their own coal in defiance of local mining laws and practices. Calling it their ‘Coal Satyagraha’ communities from nearby villages in Raigarh, many of them indigenous, asserted their entitlement over their own natural resource – coal.

A day before, a public hearing i.e. a people’s tribunal of mining affected communities in Raigarh was conducted on October 1, where many locals put forth their concerns and issues – from false cases and unresolved existing violations to the state of environmental governance and lack of remedy.
On October 2, a Coal Satyagraha rally started from Gare village mobilized hundreds of people, including adivasis, women and children, which ended in villagers digging up their own coal near the Gare Pelma IV/6 block in Tamnar, Raigarh.
